Description

Abuse and neglect in long-term care (LTC) remain critical concern that impacts resident safety, dignity, and quality of life. At Burton Manor LTC, strengthening frontline staff knowledge and fostering a culture of person-centered care have been key priorities in addressing these challenges. PANDA is an education initiative that help staff recognize,
prevent, identify, and respond to abuse and neglect which aligns with the “Preventing and Addressing Abuse and Neglect of Older Adults” Best Practice Guideline.

At Burton Manor, the approach focused on structured education, peer-to-peer learning, and ongoing mentorship to build staff competence and confidence in recognizing, preventing, and responding to abuse and neglect. Frontline staff were supported to take on BPSO Champion roles, promoting accountability, early identification of risk factors, and
consistent application of evidence-based practices in daily care.

Pre- and post-implementation data at Burton Manor demonstrated improved staff knowledge of resident rights, resident and family satisfaction, and stronger communication within the interdisciplinary team. A notable reduction in reported critical incidents related to abuse and neglect was observed, along with improvements in documentation and adherence to individualized care plans.

The findings at Burton Manor LTC highlight that integrating BPGs through a structured and people-centered approach like PANDA can lead to meaningful improvements in staff practice and resident outcomes. Sustaining these improvements will require ongoing education, strong leadership support, and continued engagement of frontline champions
to reinforce a culture of safe, respectful, and high-quality care.
