Description

Background:
Scarborough Health Network (SHN), a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO®) for over 11 years in partnership with the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), is committed to high-quality, patient-centred, evidence-informed care. This initiative aimed to strengthen internal capacity to grow BPSO Champions and actively advance RNAO Best Practice Guideline (BPG) implementation, aligned with RNAO BPSO priorities and implementation toolkits.
Aim:
To build interprofessional capacity and readiness to lead, implement, and sustain evidence-based practice, using RNAO BPGs and resources to support SHN’s strategic vision.
Methods/Implementation:
Using a Train-the-Trainer model grounded in RNAO BPG implementation frameworks and toolkits, SHN developed a BPSO Champion Workshop. The program was guided and evaluated with support from an RNAO coach. Sixty interprofessional participants attended, including nurses, support staff, dietitians, professional practice leaders, and an Indigenous navigator. Content was tailored using pre-survey results to align with learners’ needs. Participants received BPG resources, access to toolkits, and practical strategies for implementation in their clinical areas.
Results/Outcomes:
Pre/post evaluation demonstrated marked improvements:
• Familiarity with BPSO increased significantly, with “very familiar” rising from 8% to 57%
• “Extremely/very familiar” with BPGs increased from 6% to 100% combined
• Strong confidence in contributing to practice change rose from 9.7% to 37.5%
• 79.7% reported learning expectations were met
Lessons Learned & Implications:
Embedding equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility—through land acknowledgment and Indigenous-led engagement—enhanced cultural humility. The structured, adaptable, interprofessional model proved effective, scalable, and sustainable. High demand (including a waitlist) highlights the need for ongoing sessions. Continued champion engagement, tailored learning, and knowledge-sharing are critical to sustaining practice change and improving patient outcomes.
