Description

BACKGROUND:
CAMH is Canada’s largest mental health teaching hospital and one of the world’s leading research centers in its field. In 2023, CAMH committed to partnering with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization ® (BPSO®) through the implementation of five RNAO BPGs. As of 2026, CAMH achieved RNAO BPSO® designation, which acknowledges successful implementation of three to five BPGs.
AIM:
The aim of this project is to evaluate CAMH’s implementation of five RNAO BPGs between May 2023 and June 2026.
METHODS:
This project employed Braun and Clarke’s qualitative methodology to conduct both an inductive and deductive thematic analysis of CAMH internal documents related to BPG implementation, including those that were not required to be submitted by the RNAO through its Nursing Quality Indicators for Reporting and Evaluation® system. The authors engaged in inductive thematic analysis to highlight the ways in which CAMH’s unique practice setting and culture has influenced the success of BPG implementation as well as deductive thematic analysis to evaluate CAMH’s BPG implementation against the RNAO’s Social Movement Action (SMA) framework.
OUTCOMES:
This implementation evaluation highlights the importance of organizational and executive leadership support, leveraging existing structures and documentation practices to facilitate sustained engagement, and a nursing-led culture of care that champions robust interprofessional engagement. The inductive thematic analysis highlights the organizational strengths that have supported successful BPG implementation at CAMH. The deductive thematic analysis validates RNAO’s SMA framework.
IMPLICATIONS:
In partnership with the interprofessional team and people with lived experience, CAMH has engaged its organizational values of courage, respect, and collaboration to embed and sustain best practices. This BPG implementation evaluation highlights key features of successful BPG implementation and emphasizes the central role of formal and informal nursing leadership in driving change and advancing evidence-based care.
