Description
Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare (HDGH) is a 287-bed specialized post-acute care hospital providing comprehensive services, including mental health, addictions care, rehabilitation, complex medical care, palliative care, and community programs. As part of the inaugural Mental Health and Substance Use Best Practice Spotlight Organization® (BPSO®) specialty program, HDGH is committed to evidence-based practices that improve patient outcomes and system integration.
HDGH launched a Naloxone Distribution Program in partnership with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, utilizing the Social Movement Action Framework. This initiative equips intradisciplinary team members with the knowledge and skills to become Naloxone Distributors following completion of an e-learning training module. This supports a proactive and preventative approach to overdose risk mitigation by enabling frontline staff to provide Take-Home Naloxone kits to individuals identified as high risk and closely aligns with the Engaging Clients Who Use Substances and Person-Centred Care Best Practice Guidelines.
Eligible recipients include patients discharged on prescribed opioids, individuals with current or past opioid use, those using other substances that may increase overdose risk, and caregivers of at-risk individuals. Naloxone kits are widely accessible across inpatient and outpatient settings, and community locations, ensuring broader reach and enhanced opportunities for health education and harm reduction awareness, further enhancing community partnerships.
This initiative reflects HDGH’s commitment to a comprehensive, integrated mental health and addictions system within Windsor-Essex, emphasizing both emergency response and prevention strategies. Facilitated by the Clinical Practice Manager of Mental Health and Addictions and Addictions and Chemical Dependency Councilors as designated Naloxone Leads, whose leadership was instrumental in program development and implementation.
Presently, over 200 Naloxone kits have been distributed, and 454 staff members are trained as Naloxone Distributors. Program development, reassessment, evaluation and interdisciplinary team member training will be ongoing throughout initiative implementation and sustainability plan.
