Description

Abstract:
Developing sustainable capacity for Best Practice Guideline (BPG) implementation requires more than identifying champions, it demands intentional strategies that prioritize engagement, accessibility, and organizational support. This presentation will outline a practical approach to building and mobilizing champions within a long-term care setting, with a focus on removing common barriers to participation and sustaining momentum over time.
To strengthen internal capacity and reinforce that evidence-based practice is a shared responsibility, three members of the leadership team representing both nursing and non-nursing roles, were formally certified to deliver BPG education. This interdisciplinary approach promoted inclusivity and reinforced the message that all team members play a critical role in practice change.
Recognizing that competing clinical demands often limit staff participation, training was strategically scheduled in advance of staffing rotations to maximize attendance. An off-site training environment was intentionally selected to create a sense of importance and focus, while minimizing workplace interruptions. A key engagement strategy included providing participants with protected time to attend, supported by a clear organizational commitment that they would not be redeployed to the unit in the event of short staffing. This approach significantly increased attendance, reduced distractions, and demonstrated leadership’s commitment to practice change.
Training sessions were designed to include both new participants and previously certified staff, leveraging existing knowledge while expanding the champion base across home areas. Ongoing sustainment strategies included regular touchpoints, role clarity, and opportunities for champions to apply and share their knowledge in practice.
Attendees will gain actionable strategies for champion recruitment, engagement, and sustainment, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Lessons learned will highlight how interdisciplinary leadership, proactive planning, and visible organizational support can enhance capacity building and drive meaningful, lasting practice change.
