Description
Background: Since its designation as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) in 2006, West Park Healthcare Centre (WPHC)-University Health Network (UHN) has remained steadfast in its commitment to evidence-informed practices. The implementation of Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) at WP is grounded in social movement science, promoting knowledge acquisition and sustained practice change. Central to the success of these initiatives are the Best Practice Champions (BPCs)—interprofessional clinical team members who serve as change agents and advocate for best practices within their units.
Aim: To empower interprofessional clinical teams with essential skills through BPC Workshops to lead and manage changes in clinical areas.
Implementation Approach: BPSO Lead at WP provides information on BPC workshop as part of new staff orientation on a monthly basis. Additionally, in-person BPC Workshops are offered to the clinical staff every four months, which empower teams with new knowledge and skills to implement Knowledge-to-Action Framework in clinical practices to sustain BPGs. The Champions act as a change agent and lead Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives on their clinical units.
Clinical staff members either complete RNAO BPC eLearning or an in-person BPC workshop. Champions are awarded a certificate, T-shirt and an electronic Champion signature to increase the visibility of the program.
Results: Over the past six months, 75 interdisciplinary staff members completed BPC training. Increased Champions’ engagement and participation in unit-specific QI initiatives were associated with a reduction in safety events including falls and pressure injuries, with the use of BPGs and collaborative approaches.
Implication for Practice: Recent rapid growth reflects a heightened awareness of the BPC program across WPHC. The active participation of the interprofessional clinical teams by leading QI initiatives has empowered them to take ownership to make and sustain changes using BPGs and collaborative approaches to improve patient care and clinical practices.
