Description

Background
The International Pressure Injury Prevalence Survey (IPIP) is a global benchmarking initiative to support pressure injury prevention and assessment efforts. WOHS sought to improve engagement when participation rates plateaued at 65% in 2023. This gap reflected challenges in frontline awareness, ownership and sustained engagement highlighting an opportunity for nursing leadership.

Methods
Guided by the LEADS and Social Movement Action Frameworks , William Osler Health System implemented a multimodal strategy from 2024-2026 which included:
Targeted pressure injury education days to build knowledge and confidence. Post education survey and testimonials from attendees showed positive reception and increased knowledge.
Proactive leadership rounding to kick off, coach, troubleshoot, and reinforce practice expectations.
Foster ownership and recognition through branded campaign materials and recognition activities.
Alignment of IPIP with Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) designation activities.
Standardization and visibility of policies and bedside visual cues.
Accountability through the BPSO governance from frontline to the Board.

Results
Following implementation, patient participation in the IPIP survey increased from 65% (2023) to 95% (2026), sustaining >90% engagement over the past three years. Units demonstrated improved participation, readiness, consistency in assessments and increased visibility of pressure injury prevention strategies. Champions who were involved in unit level pressure injury prevention audits and activities enhanced their accountability and strengthened knowledge translation at point of care.

Implications
This initiative demonstrates how nursing leadership can harness grassroots champions to drive engagement, build capacity and sustain practice change.
